Love can develop and grow with time and devotion. That's what Ren Yu is hoping for. Remember what he said to Jin Mi? He doesn't ask that she love him deeply; he only asks that she love him a little bit more each day, a little bit more each month, a little bit more each year, until that love becomes everlasting. I think he has one of the best lines ever delivered by a man desperately in love with a woman who does not return his feelings.
I was very sympathetic towards Ren Yu in the novel, because although he was calculative, there was always a hint of longing and sadness hovering underneath that calm facade. I think Luo Yunxi did an excellent job of portraying that loneliness and desperate need to hold onto the only thing he had ever cared enough to fight for - Jin Mi. After Luo Yunxi, I cannot imagine another actor playing Ren Yu.

@Melanie I understand his patience and find him commendable for it. It's just that his tactics for owning his love were quite horrible. He was the one who knew how deeply they loved each other and conspired against them the most.
He also used his knowledge of her unfeeling pill to make them doubt each other. If he was upfront about his intentions like Sui He was then I honestly wouldn't care. It's his two-faced method that makes me think even if he waited centuries and she still didn't love him or spare him a second glance, it'd be his karma.

Melanie exactly, his line was very sad and touching. He perfectly depicts the emotions of a person dealing with unreciprocated love. It’s undeniable that he loves Jin Mi a lot but I disagree with his tactics in trying to get Jin Mi. He’s a pitiful character as all his life, he never had a taste of love. He was seperated from his mother at birth and was always getting blames for things that he didn’t do from his stepmother. He didn’t know how to love and spent his time acquainted with the night, the stars and a lone deer. So the first time he falls in love, he doesn’t know the “right” way to love. So he does the only thing that his heart wanted him to do - keep her by his side. In a way, he deserves his karma. He knew that what he was doing was unforgivable (fixing the loveless pill, misleading Jin Mi into killing Xu Feng). He knew that Jin Mi and Xu Feng were In Love with each other but he destroyed their relationship. Xu Feng always treated him as a good brother and never did him wrong, he shared everything with him and was always the first person to stand out and protect him, but he stole his lover, his throne, and caused his lover to kill her. I feel like that was very heartless thing to do.

Brenda T yes, I totally agree, I just don’t like the way he pretends to be the kindest person in the world and uses everyone as his pawn, even the girl that he claims to love. I would admire his honesty if he just faced Xu Feng at the beginning and told him that he likes Jin mi and his intentions on stealing the throne but he didn’t. He pretended not to care, pretended to be best brothers with Xu Feng, got close to Jin mi and plotted the whole tragedy that followed. If I was Jin mi, I wouldn’t choose him either. If he was actually the kind Run Yu that he pretended to be at the start, he might’ve still had the chance, but the manipulative Run Yu would take up too much energy to love. Even if he treated me with great kindness and love, I would still find it hard to love him when I see or hear about his ruthless and cruel methods he uses to achieve his aims

Yes, Ren Yu did not achieve his goals through honorable methods. However, Xu Feng was not exactly squeaky clean, either. The drama "cleaned up" his character quite a bit. In the novel, Xu Feng, while he never did manipulate Jin Mi, did something I felt was far worse. He initiated intimacy with her under questionable circumstances. In the drama, Jin Mi's Passionless Pill cracked, leading her to develop feelings for Xu Feng. Hence, their intimate union was consensual. In the novel, the circumstances of their union were very, very shady on Xu Feng's part. In the novel, Jin Mi's Passionless Pill never cracked and she continued to feel nothing for Xu Feng. Being naive to sexual intimacy between men and women, she was under the misguided belief that intimacy with men could increase her cultivation. While Xu Feng was unaware of the presence of the Passionless Pill inside Jin Mi, he was a smart guy, who I am sure figured out that something was a bit off about Jin Mi and her complete unawareness of sex. Instead of making sure she knew what she was getting into, he simply had intercourse with her at a time when she was mentally unable to give complete consent. In addition, even if Jin Mi was mentally capable of giving full consent (as in the drama), shouldn't Xu Feng have waited to sleep with his own brother's fiancee? Maybe he should have waited for Ren Yu and Jin Mi's engagement to be broken off first. Instead, he was quite eager to cuckold his own older brother. I bet he would be just as angry as Ren Yu had the situation been reversed.

yes, i suppose you have a point. when i was reading that scene in the novel, i was a bit scared, but knowing that JM eventually does fall for him, I didn;t put much thought into it. I suppose both men weren't completely clean either - theyve all made their fair share of mistakes. Maybe if the plot took a different turn and JM feel for RY, maybe we'll hate XF for his actions

Both Ren Yu and Xu Feng have their faults, but I have no doubt that both men would lay down their lives for Jin Mi. What gives Ren Yu a bit more edge, in my opinion, is his more handsome looks. I admit I am very fickle and will gravitate toward male eye candy. Deng Lun, while very likable and sweet in the off-screen clips, just doesn't fit my idea of the "most handsome man in the six realms," as Xu Feng is suppose to be. I think that title should go to Luo Yunxi's Ren Yu. Of course, this is personal taste, but if I were Jin Mi, I would be running toward Ren Yu's open arms and kissing his handsome face.
As a side note, I have seen some nice fan-made videos of Yang Yang (in his golden battle armor when he played Ye Hua) and Yang Zi, and I must admit that Yang Yang looked far more like my perception of Xu Feng than Deng Lun did. Again, it's my personal opinion. If Yang Yang had played Xu Feng alongside Luo Yunxi's Ren Yu, then Jin Mi would most definitely have a difficult time choosing between two very handsome brothers.

Like in One Smile Is Very Alluring and tornado girl, he portrays a warm character that is very considerate and caring (which Run Yu appeared to be)

? The main character, Pei Ren Zhen, is very similar to Ren Yu. In fact, there have been speculations that Dian Xian liked Ren Yu so much that she gave him a second chance at love in 两只前夫一台戏, and that Pei Ren Zhen was sort of a mortal version of Ren Yu. I also found Shen Miao, the female lead, to be very similar to Jin Mi, minus the weird thinking that sex could increase cultivation. :P

Well, let me know if you like Two Ex-Husbands. It is quite funny initially then turns very touching. The male lead (Pei Ren Zhen) and female lead (Shen Miao) are so reminiscent of Ren Yu and Jin Mi, respectively, that I can totally imagine Luo Yunxi and Yang Zi playing those characters. Pei Ren Zhen even calls Shen Miao "Miao Er," just like how Ren Yu calls Jin Mi "Mi Er."

Xu Jiye, in regards to ur second comment about RY. I agree with u and how u described him. But, I saw things totally differently in relation to XF. I don't think that RY stole the throne from XF as non of them was the crown prince yet. That why the empress kept pushing RY away. She knew that RY is a dragon and that he was distant to become the emperor. I think she did not want just to push him aside, she was determined to kill him to make sure that XF will get the thrown. We saw her attempting to kill him several time in the drama because of that. And actually RY was the better fit to be an emperor. Even XF knew that. I also did not see XF doing anything to stop his mom from doing all these bad things to RY. I agree that he was honest and did not want RY to die for something he didn't do. But, I never saw XF going out of his way to help RY or share anything with him.He was selfish and self-centered. He took it for granted that he was given every opportunity to show himself while his brother getting non of them. His mom made sure to remove all obstacles for him and RY was one of the main obstacles. she made sure he is never given any opportunity to shin because she knew he would possibly outshine XF. I believe have they both been given the same opportunities, RY will be on par with XF and even exceeds him in diplomacy. That's why, the empress made sure he never get the opportunity to do so and XF took that for granted.

The audiobook is very well done, and I really enjoyed Miao Er (female lead) and Pei Yan Zhen's (male lead) voices. (Sorry, I think I misspelled the male lead's name in my earlier posts.) I like to think of Miao Er and Pei Yan Zhen as Mi Er and Ren Yu's mortal counterparts, because the similarities are so obvious, and that Mi Er (as Miao Er) finally turned around and noticed Ren Yu (as Pei Yan Zhen) waiting patiently for her to love him back.
The second male lead in Two Ex-Husbands (the other ex-husband) was not very well developed in the novel, but he seemed very similar to the Ashes of Love drama version of Yan You (the serpent immortal). The second male lead, too, loved Miao Er very much.

Xu Feng was oblivious to his mother’s wrongdoings when he was a child (the scene where Xu feng was drunk with the first time, he told Run Yu that it was one of his happiest childhood moments. He was shocked when he found out that his mother punished Run Yu for it) later when he grew up, he did share everything with Run Yu, he gave him medicine and other items. In the first few eps, when the empress blamed Run Yu for attempting to kill Xu feng during nirvana, Xu feng protected him and spoke for him. He was an obedient son, and cared a lot about filial gratitude which was considered to be very important in ancient China. As a son, he could not openly defy his mother. As a brother, he fulfilled his duty by speaking for Run Yu and proving his innocence. All that the empress has done was for Xu feng, but as he had said, he never wanted it and never intended on fight for it with Run Yu. But run Yu knew that Jin mi and Xu feng were in love, but he manipulated the Jin mi’s father into giving him Jin mi’s hand in marriage. Despite his love for Jin mi being true, he selfishly tricked Jin mi into killing the man that she loved to fulfill his only selfish desire to be the Sky King. He was wrong in using the girl that he loved against his enemy who was the brother that always treated him with kindness and trusted him. Even when Xu feng told him that he was willing to give him the throne in exchange for Jin mi, he still plotted to use Jin mi to kill him during the wedding. If he really wanted to kill him,he could always have a battle with him, and kill him with a legitimate excuse but he used the most ugliest method to do it.

I feel like Xu Feng only had a peripheral understanding of the neglect and emotional mistreatment Ren Yu had suffered from childhood until adulthood. He knew superficially that his mother was not very warm toward his older brother, but I don't think he knew, or chose not to believe, how cruel his mother could be. Xu Feng was the privileged golden boy who had everything and everyone's admiration and respect. When he gave things to Ren Yu, it was like a well-meaning gesture that the wealthy pass out to the poor. He was being kind, no doubt, but never could he understand what it was like to be Ren Yu, unless he had walked in Ren Yu's shoes. He was willing to be kind and generous with his older brother when it came to items that weren't important to him. But when he truly wanted something (Jin Mi), he did not hesitate to take as he pleased, without stopping to think whether his actions were right and respectful toward his older brother. If Ren Yu was selfish in trying to keep Jin Mi by his side, then Xu Feng was just as thoughtless and selfish when he went down to the mortal realm with Jin Mi and asked the Moon God to tie him and Jin Mi together romantically. It was a highly inappropriate request, given that Jin Mi was his brother's fiancee, an engagement that she had openly agreed to in front of the Heavenly Emperor. (Whether she knew what she was agreeing to was another matter, since she didn't have any partial feelings toward Xu Feng, either, at that moment in time.)
Ren Yu is such a multi-faceted and fascinating character that I feel like his added scenes in the drama are crucial to the understanding of the evolution of his character and the inevitable unfolding of the plot. In contrast, Xu Feng is pretty much a straightforward heroic type that he doesn't require much elaboration to understand his character.
In a way, Xu Feng's intimacy with Ji Mi and his public challenge and declaration that he intended to take Jin Mi away from Ren Yu were pretty much the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. Already, the years of emotional abuse and neglect had traumatized Ren Yu, even though he did a great job of hiding the emotional scars. Then, his mother's murder right in front of his eyes further inched Ren Yu closer to the edge. To someone who had never dared to hope for happiness and love, Ren Yu, of course, viewed Jin Mi's appearance as a breath of fresh air and his salvation; she became the light of Ren Yu's lonely existence. (I am sure Jin Mi's peerless beauty helped deepen Ren Yu's feelings.) Therefore, when Xu Feng threatened to take Ren Yu's bright ray of light (Jin Mi) away, he was simply asking his older brother to kill him.

All that the empress has done was for Xu feng, but as he had said, he never wanted it and never intended on fight for it with Run Yu. But run Yu knew that Jin mi and Xu feng were in love, but he manipulated the Jin mi’s father into giving him Jin mi’s hand in marriage. Despite his love for Jin mi being true, he selfishly tricked Jin mi into killing the man that she loved to fulfill his only selfish desire to be the Sky King. He was wrong in using the girl that he loved against his enemy who was the brother that always treated him with kindness and trusted him. Even when Xu feng told him that he was willing to give him the throne in exchange for Jin mi, he still plotted to use Jin mi to kill him during the wedding. If he really wanted to kill him,he could always have a battle with him, and kill him with a legitimate excuse but he used the most ugliest method to do it.

I feel like Xu Feng only had a peripheral understanding of the neglect and emotional mistreatment Ren Yu had suffered from childhood until adulthood. He knew superficially that his mother was not very warm toward his older brother, but I don't think he knew, or chose not to believe, how cruel his mother could be. Xu Feng was the privileged golden boy who had everything and everyone's admiration and respect. When he gave things to Ren Yu, it was like a well-meaning gesture that the wealthy pass out to the poor. He was being kind, no doubt, but never could he understand what it was like to be Ren Yu, unless he had walked in Ren Yu's shoes. He was willing to be kind and generous with his older brother when it came to items that weren't important to him. But when he truly wanted something (Jin Mi), he did not hesitate to take as he pleased, without stopping to think whether his actions were right and respectful toward his older brother. If Ren Yu was selfish in trying to keep Jin Mi by his side, then Xu Feng was just as thoughtless and selfish when he went down to the mortal realm with Jin Mi and asked the Moon God to tie him and Jin Mi together romantically. It was a highly inappropriate request, given that Jin Mi was his brother's fiancee, an engagement that she had openly agreed to in front of the Heavenly Emperor. (Whether she knew what she was agreeing to was another matter, since she didn't have any partial feelings toward Xu Feng, either, at that moment in time.)
Ren Yu is such a multi-faceted and fascinating character that I feel like his added scenes in the drama are crucial to the understanding of the evolution of his character and the inevitable unfolding of the plot. In contrast, Xu Feng is pretty much a straightforward heroic type that he doesn't require much elaboration to understand his character.
In a way, Xu Feng's intimacy with Ji Mi and his public challenge and declaration that he intended to take Jin Mi away from Ren Yu were pretty much the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. Already, the years of emotional abuse and neglect had traumatized Ren Yu, even though he did a great job of hiding the emotional scars. Then, his mother's murder right in front of his eyes further inched Ren Yu closer to the edge. To someone who had never dared to hope for happiness and love, Ren Yu, of course, viewed Jin Mi's appearance as a breath of fresh air and his salvation; she became the light of Ren Yu's lonely existence. (I am sure Jin Mi's peerless beauty helped deepen Ren Yu's feelings.) Therefore, when Xu Feng threatened to take Ren Yu's bright ray of light (Jin Mi) away, he was simply asking his older brother to kill him.
