Melanie indeed, I think the drama added in a lot of scenes that gave an understandable explanation for the audience to forgive Run Yu, but in the novel, there was no explanation given for his actions. In the drama, He had a pitiful and tragic past and was treated unfairly all throughout his childhood, meanwhile his brother Xu Feng was loved by the empress and the emperor and was carefully protected under the wings of his parents. I don’t know what Xu Feng would have done if he went through all the Run Yu did, maybe he would have done the same things as Run Yu, maybe not. In the drama, Xu feng has been portrayed as this heroic figure who was well respected and proud, while Run Yu has always been living in his shadow - the king never gave any military power to him when Xu feng was there.
Yes, maybe Xu feng did give Run Yu a lot of items that was unimportant to him, but he did care for him and did it out of brotherly love. For a long time, he insisted and believed that it wasn’t Run Yu Who was trying to kill him although all the evidence was pointing directly at him. Xu feng has done a lot of wrong things to Run Yu but they were all regarding Jin mi, the woman that he loves and could give up his life for , such as sleeping with his brothers fiancé, jumping into the mortal world after her etc. But what was Run Yu doing at that time? Xu Feng jumped into the mortal world after her and run Yu didn’t visit her before he saw Jin Mi giving Xu Feng a bath in the Celestial Fox’ and became jealous. He knew that the Spirit Extinguishing Arrow was on the loose and that the people of Demon World had their plans set to use it on Xu feng, meanwhile the empress had her eyes set on Jin Mi being the victim of the arrow. If Xu feng could find about it, the empress could find out about it, and even Liu Ying could find out about it, with Run Yu’s broad information line, how could he not know? If he knew, why didn’t he go save his brother and Jin mi? Could he not guess that Xu Feng jumped after her because Jin mi was in danger? Did he not think that he could protect her better as a celestial? He was only busy recovering his memories and finding his mother during the second half of the mortal world, he had nothing bothering him at the start so why didn’t he go?
As for Xu feng sleeping with Jin mi, if Run Yu cares so much about her, why did he allow her to do so? As Jin mi had said to him, he only allowed her to go in and out of Qi Wu Palace because he wanted to use her to tie Xu feng down. However, judging by the fact that she was angry at Run Yu for lying to her and using her, and that she lost control of her emotions, you could argue that Jin mi was pinning everything on Run Yu and blaming him for everything. To look at the situation in a different way, Run Yu allowed Jin mi to go visit Xu feng often because he trusted her and wanted her to be happy. He doesn’t want her to feel that her engagement with him would restrict her of her freedom to make friends. After finding out about their romantic night, is it not quite obvious to him that Jin mi does not love him and is in love with Xu Feng? He believed that Jin mi was incapable of love because of the loveless pill, but after seeing that her love for Xu Feng strong enough to crack the pill, what right does he have to repair it and take away her freedom to love?
Of course, Run Yu May have truly loved Jin mi, after all, he did give up half his lifetime to save Jin mi. She was the warm ray of light that shone into his dark lonely nights, and he clung to her like a drowning man would clung onto his last hope of survival but he should not have his trickery and manipulation to keep her by his side. Xu Feng indeed did Run Yu wrong, but his actions were not the slightest way as severe as Run Yu. Run Yu manipulated Jin Mi to kill Xu Feng 1) because his mother killed his mother, so he will kill his son instead to make the empress get a taste of what it was like to lose a loved family member. 2) because he posed as a threat to his happy future with Jin Mi. He knew that with Xu feng around, Jin mi would never fall in love with him and he was afraid that one day, Jin mi would overcome the effects of the loveless pill and fall for Xu feng again. Xu Feng had said to Jin mi once that if she was in love with Run Yu, he would naturally be happy for them and offer them his best wishes, but of course, he could only be saying that because he knew that Jin mi loved him, not Run Yu. But Run Yu was unable to do that, he plotted his way into the engagement with Jin Mi and was guilt tripping her to stay by his side. If you truly love someone, shouldn’t you let them go and want them to be happy? Maybe that is easily said than done, and too virtuous for anyone to do but if you love someone, shouldn’t you push them towards the light rather than dragging them down into the dark black hole of despair with you? Did he think that when Jin mi eventually realises that she killed the man that she loved, she would be able to face the future as carefree and happy as she did before? Did he think that when she ever finds out about his schemes, it would not cause her to hate herself for stupidly believing him? Even if Jin mi eventually does fall in love with Run Yu, and stops loving Xu feng, would she not feel bad and live in guilt because she killed a man that would willingly put down his life for her by using his feeling for her to kill him? Is his personal selfish desire for company and love really worth the bet of risking Jin mi’s entire happy future? I don’t know.
I don’t hate Run Yu, I just dislike him. He was an interesting characters and through him, we were able to see what a person could do when they are pushed passed their breaking point. I enjoyed watching his different stages of growth and how he was eventually forced onto the wrong path of revenge. But we cannot deny that his actions were wrong and unforgivable. Xu feng would do him wrong because of Jin mi, but he wouldn’t go as far as killing his brother to tie so Jin mi would have no choice but to be with him. Run Yu may have a plethora of reasons for his ruthless actions, but one always has the choice of picking between right and wrong. Even after Jin mi killed Xu feng and he resurrected, finding out that run Yu forced his mother to jump to her death and that his father died because of Run Yu’s filial ingratitude, his first instinct was not to seek for revenge by taking the throne as demon Lord. It wasn’t until he realises that run Yu was determined to kill him that he decided to take up the throne because that was the only shelter that he could take. It was either that or be killed by his own brother and waste Jin mi (or Sui he as he may have believed then)’s efforts in resurrecting him. Even in the very end, it was Run Yu who led the army against the demon world and wanted to battle to death with Xu feng. We may pity Run Yu’s actions, but we can’t mix our pity with morals. I understand where Run Yu is coming from, but if I ever meet a Run Yu in real life, i would flee as far as possible in the opposite direction from him because there is no limit in the extent that he would go to achieve his aims

I understand and agree with you on many of your points. My biggest gripe with Run Yu, as I said above, was his method. Aside from that, I found him to be a sympathetic person throughout the majority of the drama. He's the more interesting character because he had more character development. It makes me think of Yan Xun from Princess Agents (and honestly, in Princess Agents I didn't care how ruthless YX was I rooted for him up until the final episode). They both started off good and just but both were pushed into a corner by people they considered friends/ family. He truly was kind-hearted and loved both Jin Mi and Xu Feng. He really would've laid the world at XF's feet. The parents' generation just screwed everything up for the three of them.
I don't think he would've done anything drastic until the empress killed his mother. He was angered by the romance between XF and JM in the mortal realm, but I don't think he would've staged anything as elaborate as his coup during his wedding until his mother was killed.
He planned the coup but I don't think he actually wanted XF to die but it was a necessary means to an end. He did mourn XF's death and he did feel regret for it because he truly did love him. After all, his happiest moments growing up were with XF. Unfortunately his hatred for the empress won over his affection for XF.
I agree that XF was ignorant to what his mother was doing. I suppose that happens when everything is handed to him on a silver platter. It's kind of similar to everyone always siding with him. One thing that always bothered me was that the Fox Immortal Uncle always sided with XF. He always condemned everything RY did and I loved when RY stood his ground and told him that no one had the right to judge his actions now because growing up, everyone saw what he went through and willingly chose to ignore it. It's just that RY got caught up in that momentous cycle of hatred that he couldn't step away anymore once XF was revived.

Yes, that is true. I suppose every tragic story has a reason behind it. Run Yu, Xu Feng and Jin Mi were just unfortunate to have been caught up in the rivals of the previous generation. Run Yu reminded me of Yan Xun too, but I've always shipped Xing Yue together although I must admit, Chu Qiao and Yan Xun had many cute scenes together and that she was more carefree when she was with him. Chu Qiao cared more about justice, revenge and valued her personal morals and loyalty above all. But Jin Mi, on the other hand was a different story. Her happiest memories were with Xu Feng and she has always trusted everyone. A mistake that both Yan Xun and Run Yu made was to use the girl they loved to kill/plot to kill the man that they were in love with, using their love for them. (We all know how badly those plots backfired on them)

Melanie you said everything that I have said many times about the characters but especially Run Yu. ALL of the characters did things that were inappropriate. I did not read the novel but based on the drama alone I truly feel that everyone did something that was distasteful. But that is what set this drama apart from so many others is the development of the characters and that no one (except the Demon Princess) was truly 'good' or 'evil'.
Run Yu was a product of abuse (emotional and physical) and neglect. He does not know how to love but it is the one thing he wants more than even his own life... I truly understand every motivation that this character had and it is always nice to see others that saw him the same... I just cannot see him as 'the villain' but a damaged individual that never got a chance to heal....

KuroiHato69 yes, I’m the drama, I don’t see anyone as a villian. Maybe not even the demon princess. All that she’s ever wanted was the man she loved to love him and if she did get his love, maybe she wouldn’t have went hurling down the wrong path. In a way, I feel like she doesn’t deserve to be loved after she manipulated Yan You using his feelings for her to get him kicked out of Sky World. All misdoings cannot be forgiven using love as an excuse, but I do pity her

Yes, I agree. Everyone in the drama was straddling the fence between good and bad.
I actually started off really liking Xu Feng in the drama. In the novel, Xu Feng was the logical male character to ship with Jin Mi, since Run Yu was shrouded in mystery for the entire novel. It was hard to completely understand Run Yu, and I didn't really realize he had all along manipulated everyone until the very end of the novel. Then, BOOM! I realized Run Yu was the mastermind behind everything. That was a shocker. In contrast, Xu Feng, though rash and bad-tempered in the novel, was obviously a righteous person. He was your typical heroic character, predictable, respectable, cool because he was the War God, etc. Therefore, he was the obvious choice for Jin Mi.
However, in the drama, Run Yu was fleshed out so well that he suddenly morphed into an extremely interesting, fun-to-watch anti-hero (as KuroiHato called him). In fact, he was so interesting of a character that I humbly feel that Run Yu played a major part of driving the plot forward, whereas Xu Feng just sort of reacted to what everyone did to him. For a calm, unassuming character, Run Yu was very proactive when he set his mind to something.
Xu Feng, on the other hand, suddenly faded into the background. In trying to "clean up" his character a bit for the drama to perhaps make him more socially acceptable to female viewers (?), Xu Feng unfortunately lost his magnetism. He was no longer the brash, swaggering hero, but a watered-down, tame boy, who spent most of his time trying to steal his brother's fiancee, instead of doing his job of training his army and protecting the Heaven Realm. I blame the sсript. Unfortunately, the sсript is what it is.
At the risk of being stoned by Deng Lun's fans, I also think that there was just something missing about Deng Lun's Xu Feng (at least, for me). I can't exactly pinpoint it, but he just couldn't bring Xu Feng to life for me. He did not resemble the War God I had in mind at all, not even a watered-down version. He just didn't have that elusive "presence" so important for a male lead, especially one playing a War God. This is my first time seeing Deng Lun in a drama, and I certainly see his potential, but there is always room for improvement. He seems like a nice guy in the behind the scenes clips. I think he will become a great actor with more experience.

Luo Yunxi, on the other hand, really outshone the rest of the cast, in my opinion. Of course, this is completely subjective. His facial expressions and mannerisms, the way he transformed from the easy-going, soft-spoken Little Fish Immortal to the lethally calculative, powerful Heaven Emperor to the desperately-in-love man when with Jin Mi to the hilarious Yan You impersonator, were simply stunning. I am happy for his recognition and success and hope he will eventually attain male lead status.
Yang Zi did a good job, but her character Jin Mi, unfortunately, became less and less likable as the drama progressed. Don't even get me started on Jin Mi! I loved Jin Mi up until she went for her mortal trial. Yang Zi does ditzy and cute very well, and she made Jin Mi so lovable that no wonder she had Xu Feng and Run Yu twirled around her little finger. However, as the drama progressed, Jin Mi lost that naivety and exuberance that made her so attractive. In fact, with time, I think she could be in the same league as Run Yu in terms of manipulativeness. For instance, she pre-meditated Xu Feng's murder! She knew she couldn't match him in fighting skills. So instead, she gave him a strand of hair, gambling that he would keep it at his most vulnerable place, where the source of his cultivation was, all to ensure that when she stabbed him, she could easily locate his vulnerable spot and make her attack all the more lethal. Then, she actually stabbed him in the back! In the back! Backstabber! OMG!
Jin Mi also had Run Yu wrapped around her finger and certainly took advantage of his love for her, whether she admitted to doing so or not. After Xu Feng's death, she could have left the Celestial Realm and returned to the Floral Realm. But she chose to stay with Run Yu, even while refusing to marry the poor guy. It was like she was stringing him along. I am not sure why she did that. Plus, not once did I see her perform her Water Goddess duties. Wasn't she suppose to control the rain and snow, make sure all sea life was well? She did none of that and instead spent all her time moping about, or trying to atone for her mistakes. I bet Run Yu probably did her Water Goddess duties for her (on top of having to attend to his own Heaven Emperor responsibilities), just so his court officials wouldn't raise a ruckus about Jin Mi's negligence and just so she could keep her title and position. Then, she went and raised a huge fit about how Run Yu didn't love her near the end of the drama. Had she conveniently forgotten that he had given half of his life's cultivation to save her? And if she thought he didn't love her, why did she so confidently tell the Eldest Floral Chief (Mu Dan) when she escaped with Yan You to the Floral Realm that Run Yu would never harm her should he recapture her? Ugh. Don't forget she kept harassing Xu Feng in the Demon Realm after reviving him. He obviously didn't want her anymore, and yet, she kept going there to disturb him. She didn't care about Xu Feng's feelings or wants. All she wanted was for him to forgive her (and love her again) so that she could be happy again. It's all about her. Who cares how Xu Feng or Run Yu feels, right? Ugh.
